China Stainless Steel Exports Rebound 13.9% in August 2026
China exported approximately 445,700 tonnes of stainless steel in August 2026, up 13.9% from July but 0.5% lower year on year, as shipments to India, Turkey and other overseas markets recovered.
- August stainless steel exports reached about 445,700 tonnes, the second-highest monthly level reported in 2026.
- Shipments to India rose 61.1% from July to about 71,845 tonnes.
- Stainless steel imports increased to about 140,900 tonnes, led by stronger Indonesian supply.
- January–August exports remained 13.9% below the same period of 2025.
- Buyers should monitor export demand, inventory, grade-specific pricing and shipment schedules rather than relying on headline export growth alone.
China stainless steel exports recovered sharply in August 2026 after the July slowdown. Customs-based market data show shipments reaching approximately 445,700 tonnes, only slightly below the year's June peak.
The monthly rebound does not, however, reverse the weaker annual trend. China exported approximately 2.896 million tonnes of stainless steel during January–August, down 13.9% year on year, while cumulative net exports fell by around 19.8%.
How strong was China's August stainless steel trade rebound?
Exports increased faster than imports in absolute tonnage, lifting monthly net exports to approximately 304,700 tonnes.

Why did China stainless steel exports rebound in August?
The recovery was supported by stronger overseas orders after weaker July shipments. Demand improved across several markets, with India recording the largest month-on-month increase among major destinations.
China shipped approximately 71,845 tonnes of stainless steel to India in August, an increase of 61.1% from July. Exports to Turkey rose by around 9,979 tonnes, or 54.8%, to approximately 28,183 tonnes.
For comparison, TISCO's July stainless steel trade analysis shows the scale of the recovery from the previous month's decline.
Why did China's stainless steel imports also increase?
China imported approximately 140,900 tonnes of stainless steel in August, up 21.1% from July and 20.3% from the same month of 2025.
Indonesia remained by far the largest source, supplying approximately 118,600 tonnes, equivalent to roughly 84% of China's monthly stainless steel imports.
Indonesian cold-rolled stainless steel shipments reached approximately 104,100 tonnes, up about 33.8% from July. This increase means imported material continues to add supply competition in China's domestic market even as exports recover.
What does the rebound mean for Chinese stainless steel exporters?
Stronger August shipments show that overseas demand remains an important outlet for Chinese stainless steel supply despite the weaker January–August year-on-year total.
Growth in India, Turkey and Russia also illustrates how export demand can shift between destination markets as local purchasing conditions, seasonal demand and trade measures change.
Export administration is another factor. Since 1 January 2026, selected Chinese steel products have been subject to export-license requirements. TISCO's China steel export licensing guide explains relevant documentation and shipment-planning considerations.

What could the export rebound mean for overseas buyers?
China's domestic market remains an important source of price pressure, but stronger export orders can reduce available spot supply for some specifications. If overseas demand remains elevated, buyers may see shorter quotation-validity periods or tighter delivery windows for selected grades and finishes.
Buyers with confirmed fourth-quarter requirements may therefore consider separating essential tonnage from flexible purchasing volume instead of relying on a single market-timing decision.
What should buyers watch in the fourth quarter of 2026?
August's recovery confirms that China remains a major stainless steel exporter, but one month of stronger shipments does not establish a new upward trend.
Key indicators to monitor include Chinese domestic inventories, mill pricing, export orders to India and other major destinations, Indonesian stainless imports, trade-remedy developments and grade-specific demand. These factors will help determine whether August was primarily a rebound from July or the beginning of a more sustained export recovery.
